Taxes & Compliance Settings

Overview

Taxes & compliance settings cover a business unit's Indian tax setup. Tax Configuration shows the GST treatment types and the tax rates — GST slabs, TDS and TCS — that Bizconnekt offers on your documents, and lets you correct a rate or its description. E-Way / E-Invoice Config switches on e-way bills and e-invoices.

Both are set per business unit, and both are shown only for business units in India.

Prerequisites

  • Access to Settings in the Admin console
  • The business unit's GST Number, saved on the business unit

Accessing Taxes & Compliance Settings

In the Admin console, open Configuration → Finance. Taxes and compliance are set on two pages there:

Where your GSTIN is kept

Your GSTIN is not entered on either page. Each business unit has one GST Number, saved on the business unit itself — see Business Units.

Tax Configuration

The page has two parts: GST Treatment Types and Tax Rates.

GST Treatment Types

This is a read-only list of the GST treatment types available in the business unit. A new business unit starts with:

  • Registered Business - Regular
  • Registered Business - Composition
  • Unregistered Business
  • Special Economic Zone (SEZ)
  • Overseas
  • Customer
  • E-Commerce Operator

You can't add, remove or rename treatment types here.

Tax Rates

The Tax Rates table lists every tax rate, grouped under a parent account:

ColumnWhat it shows
CategoryGENERAL for GST, WITHHOLDING for TDS and TCS
Parent AccountThe group, such as GST [18%], TDS or TCS
Sub-AccountThe rate itself, such as CGST [9%], or a TDS/TCS section such as 194C
Rate (%)The rate, shown as a percentage
DescriptionWhat the rate is for
MethodHow it is applied: Exclusive for GST, On Base for TDS, On Total for TCS

GST rates a new business unit starts with

Parent AccountSub-Accounts
GST [0%]CGST [0%], SGST [0%], IGST [0%]
GST [5%]CGST [2.5%], SGST [2.5%], IGST [5%]
GST [12%]CGST [6%], SGST [6%], IGST [12%]
GST [18%]CGST [9%], SGST [9%], IGST [18%]
GST [28%]CGST [14%], SGST [14%], IGST [28%]
GST [40%]CGST [20%], SGST [20%], IGST [40%]

TDS and TCS rates

Under TDS and TCS, a new business unit starts with rows for the common section rates in force at the time it was created. Each row shows the section and a description. For example, section 194C (payments to contractors) has two rows:

Sub-AccountDescriptionRate
194CContractor — individual or HUF1%
194CContractor — other than individual or HUF2%

Changing a rate

  1. Click the pencil icon on the row. You can edit one row at a time.
  2. Change the Rate (%), the Description, or both. The category, accounts and method can't be changed.
  3. Click the save icon, or the cross icon to cancel.
  4. Confirm with Confirm & Save. The confirmation reminds you that tax configuration changes can affect invoicing, compliance filings and financial reports, so have your finance team review the change first.

A rate must be more than zero. If it isn't, you see "Tax rate must be greater than 0."

The row name doesn't change

Editing a rate doesn't rename its sub-account. For example, CGST [9%] keeps that name even if you change its rate.

E-Way / E-Invoice Config

This page switches on e-way bill and e-invoice generation for a business unit, and holds the GST portal credentials Bizconnekt uses to generate them:

  • Enable E-way Bill Integration and Enable E-invoice Integration switches
  • GSP Username, GSP Password and GST Username, checked against the business unit's GST Number when you save

For the full steps, see E-Way / E-Invoice Config.

How Bizconnekt Chooses CGST + SGST or IGST

Bizconnekt compares two states on each document:

  • Invoices — the state of your business unit's address and the state of the customer's shipping address.
  • Purchase bills — the state of the supplier's address and the state the goods are delivered to. A bill from an overseas supplier always uses IGST.

Understanding GST Calculations

Intra-State Transaction Example

Scenario: A business unit in Delhi invoices a customer whose shipping address is in Delhi.

Invoice Details:

  • Item Value: ₹10,000
  • GST Rate: 18%

Tax Calculation:

  • CGST @ 9%: ₹900
  • SGST @ 9%: ₹900
  • Total Tax: ₹1,800
  • Invoice Total: ₹11,800

GST Return Impact:

  • GSTR-1: Report CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900
  • GSTR-3B: Pay CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900

Inter-State Transaction Example

Scenario: A business unit in Delhi invoices a customer whose shipping address is in Maharashtra.

Invoice Details:

  • Item Value: ₹10,000
  • GST Rate: 18%

Tax Calculation:

  • IGST @ 18%: ₹1,800
  • Total Tax: ₹1,800
  • Invoice Total: ₹11,800

GST Return Impact:

  • GSTR-1: Report IGST ₹1,800
  • GSTR-3B: Pay IGST ₹1,800

Common Configuration Scenarios

Scenario 1: Initial GST Setup

Situation: New organization configuring GST for the first time.

Steps:

  1. Check that the business unit has its GST Number saved (on the business unit)
  2. Open Tax Configuration and review the GST, TDS and TCS rates
  3. If you need e-way bills or e-invoices, set them up in E-Way / E-Invoice Config
  4. Test with sample purchase and sales documents

Scenario 2: More Than One GST Registration

Situation: Company has separate GST registrations in Delhi and Mumbai.

A business unit has one GST Number, so each registration is set up as its own business unit, with its GST Number saved on it. See Business Units.

Scenario 3: Verifying Tax Calculations

Test 1: Intra-State Purchase

  • Create a purchase document from a supplier in the same state as the delivery address
  • Use an item at 18% GST
  • Verify: CGST 9% + SGST 9% applied

Test 2: Inter-State Purchase

  • Create a purchase document from a supplier in a different state
  • Use an item at 18% GST
  • Verify: IGST 18% applied

Test 3: Multiple Tax Rates

  • Create an invoice with items at different rates
  • Verify each item gets the right CGST/SGST or IGST
  • Check: the invoice total matches the tax summary

Best Practices

GST Configuration Tips

Tax Rates:

  • Review the rates in Tax Configuration during initial setup
  • Change a rate only when the law changes, and have your finance team approve it first

GST Number:

  • Save each business unit's GST Number on the business unit during initial setup
  • Set up E-Way / E-Invoice Config if you need e-way bills or e-invoices

Testing:

  • Create test documents for both intra-state and inter-state cases
  • Check GST reports to make sure tax is classified correctly

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I change a GST rate?

A: Yes. In Tax Configuration, click the pencil icon on the row and change its rate or description. You can't add or delete rates, and the rate must be more than zero.

Q: Can I add or change GST treatment types?

A: No. Tax Configuration only lists them.

Q: Where do I enter my GSTIN?

A: On the business unit, as its GST Number. Each business unit has one. The Taxes & Compliance pages do not store it.

Q: How does Bizconnekt decide whether to apply CGST + SGST or IGST?

A: It compares states on the document — for an invoice, your business unit's address against the customer's shipping address; for a bill, the supplier's address against the delivery state. Same state = CGST + SGST (CGST + UTGST in a union territory). Different states = IGST. See How Bizconnekt Chooses CGST + SGST or IGST.

Q: Is there a reverse charge switch here?

A: No. Tax Configuration has no reverse charge setting.

Q: What is the difference between Registered Business - Regular and Composition?

A: Under GST law, the regular scheme allows full input tax credit at standard rates. The composition scheme is a simpler scheme for small businesses, with lower rates and no input tax credit.

Q: Does Bizconnekt file GST returns for me?

A: No. Bizconnekt prepares your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B in Tax Compliance in the web app. You file them yourself on the GST portal.
