GSTR-1 Filing
GSTR-1 is the return of your sales. Bizconnekt prepares the file from your invoices and credit notes, tells you about any document it cannot place, and keeps a record of what you uploaded and when you filed it. The filing steps are in a GSTR-1 return panel at the top of the GSTR-1 report.
Availability depends on your plan and your role. You need Tax Compliance access (View) to see the panel, and Edit access to export, mark filed or undo. The tables below the panel need Tax Reports access (View). Without Tax Compliance access the panel says: Exporting and filing GSTR-1 needs Tax Compliance access (View). Ask your administrator to grant it.
Open the GSTR-1 filing panel
- Click Reports in the sidebar, then Tax Reports.
- Choose the GSTR1 report.
- The GSTR-1 return panel appears above the report.
It works on the business unit you are currently in. The Return period opens on the latest return that has ended. A quarterly filer picks the quarter's last month.
The steps
| Step | What you do | Status afterwards |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Export | Click Export for filing (JSON). The file downloads and Bizconnekt stores a copy of that export. | Exported |
| 2. Upload | Upload the file on the GST portal and file it there. | No change in Bizconnekt |
| 3. Mark filed | Back in Bizconnekt, click Mark filed and choose the export you uploaded. | Filed |
Statuses
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Not exported | Nothing is stored yet. Export the return to create the file you upload on the portal. |
| Draft | Started but not exported. Export the return to create its file. |
| Exported | Exported, not yet marked filed. Upload the file on the portal, then mark it filed with that export. |
| Filed | Marked filed. Later changes to these documents go into a later return as amendments. |
When the return is filed you also see the filing date, the ARN (if you entered one) and the export code.
Actions
| Button | Shown when |
|---|---|
| Export for filing (JSON) | The return is not filed. You can export again after fixing documents; each export is stored. |
| Mark filed | The return is not filed and at least one export is stored. |
| Unmark filed | The return is filed. |
Under the status, N stored export(s), newest first opens a list of every export with its code, date, number of documents and how many were left out.
Documents left out, and items to review
Before you export, the panel lists anything the return cannot handle cleanly. A document the return cannot place does not stop you from filing — it is left out of the file, and reported in a later return once you fix it.
Needs correction — left out of this return. A list with the Document (linked, so you can open and fix it), its Type, Why it is left out, the Taxable value and the Tax. Reasons you may see:
- No place of supply — add the customer's state on the document
- The place of supply is not a GST state
- The customer's GSTIN is not valid
- The credit note's original invoice cannot be found
- The e-commerce operator's GSTIN is not valid
- The tax type does not match the place of supply (IGST vs CGST + SGST)
A document that an earlier filed return already left out shows Left out since that period.
Items in the file to review. Documents that are in the file but worth checking, with the Document, the GSTR-1 table and What to do. Each starts with Review — in the file or, for a document an earlier filing left out that is not in this return, Check — not in this return.
When there is something to confirm
If documents are left out or items need review, clicking Export for filing (JSON) first shows a box titled This GSTR-1 file has N document(s) left out and M item(s) to review, with both lists. Check them, then click Export anyway, or Cancel to fix them first.
When the export succeeds
- The file downloads, with a message to upload it on the GST portal, then mark GSTR-1 filed.
- A banner confirms the file name and its export code and says it is stored.
- Any documents left out of that file are listed under Left out of the exported file, and items to check under Items in the exported file to review.
- If the file fails the format check, the banner adds The file failed the format check with the reasons. Fix them and export again.
When it fails
A red message explains why. If it says the file leaves documents out or has items to review, the message offers Review them and export, which opens the confirmation box above. Nothing is filed until you mark it.
Mark the return filed
- Click Mark filed.
- Under Export uploaded on the portal (required), choose the export. Each is listed with its code, date and document count. The code is in the file name you uploaded.
- Enter the Filing date on the portal (required). It cannot be before the period ends or in the future. It opens on today.
- Optionally enter the ARN (acknowledgement reference number).
- Click Mark filed.
Periods are marked filed in order: if the previous period's GSTR-1 is not yet marked filed, Bizconnekt asks you to mark that one first. This does not apply to the first period you ever mark filed for a business unit, because there is no earlier period to wait for. Periods before it need no record.
If the export you choose left documents out, the box says so: filing it records them as left out, and each one is reported by a later return once fixed.
On success the status becomes Filed, and the documents count as reported from then on. A filed return keeps a record of what it left out: As filed, this return left out N document(s).
If Bizconnekt says the export overlaps a filing made since, the message offers The portal already received this file — record it. Use it only if you are sure. You will be asked Why record this export although it overlaps an earlier filing? and the reason is kept.
Undo a filing
Click Unmark filed, give a Reason, and confirm. Use it only for a filing marked by mistake, and only the latest one. The stored exports stay and the reason is kept.
Tables in this return
Below the panel, Tables in this return shows each GSTR-1 table as the file will carry it — Table, Section and Rows — for review. Each can be downloaded as Excel or JSON (the buttons are disabled for a table with no rows), and All tables (Excel) gives one workbook. These downloads are for checking; only a stored export can be marked filed.
The sections include B2B, B2CL, EXP, B2CS, NIL, CDNR, CDNUR, HSN summary (registered and unregistered), DOCS, ECO, and the amended-invoice sections.
Advances received (table 11A) and advances adjusted (table 11B) are not in the file yet. If you received an advance for services in this period, enter it on the portal.
