Understanding Key Metrics
Total Sales Amount
Aggregate revenue generated from all sales to this customer during the selected period. Includes:
- All sales orders (invoiced and unbilled)
- Multiple transactions summed together
- GST-inclusive amounts
- Net of any returns or credit notes
This metric identifies your highest-revenue customers and their contribution to overall sales.
Number of Orders
Count of distinct sales orders placed by the customer in the period. This metric reveals:
- High frequency buyers - Many orders indicate regular purchasing
- One-time buyers - Single order may need nurturing for repeat business
- Purchasing patterns - Regular intervals vs sporadic orders
Compare with total sales to understand if customer places few large orders or many small orders.
Average Order Value (AOV)
Calculated as Total Sales Amount ÷ Number of Orders. This metric helps:
- Identify high-value customers (high AOV)
- Segment customers by transaction size
- Set account management priorities
- Design pricing strategies for different customer tiers
Example: Customer A with ₹10L sales from 2 orders (AOV ₹5L) requires different service than Customer B with ₹10L sales from 50 orders (AOV ₹20K).
Last Order Date
Most recent order date shows customer recency:
- Recent dates - Active customers with current engagement
- Old dates - Inactive customers at risk of churn
- Gap analysis - Long gaps since last order indicate potential issues
Combine recency with frequency and monetary value for RFM (Recency, Frequency, Monetary) customer segmentation.
