How to Add Bill of Materials

Overview

Creating a BOM defines a product's components — the materials, labour and services that go into it — for building kits and assemblies and for dropping component lines onto documents. This guide walks through building a multi-level BOM with cost tracking and quality parameters.

A BOM is optional and does not control how a product is manufactured. For the difference between a parts list and a production route, see BOM vs WO Process.

Prerequisites

Before creating a BOM:

  • Base model item must be created first (the finished product)
  • All component items should exist in Items master
  • User role has "Create BOM" permission
  • Cost categories configured in system settings

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Navigate to Add BOM

  1. Go to Item Central from sidebar
  2. Click Bill of Material
  3. Click Add BOM button (green plus icon)
  4. Add BOM form opens

Step 2: Select BOM Item Type

Choose whether this BOM is for goods or services:

Goods - Physical products (default selection)

  • Manufacturing items
  • Assembled products
  • Packaged goods

Services - Intangible offerings

  • Service packages
  • Maintenance bundles
  • Consulting deliverables

Step 3: Choose Product Level

Select the product structure level:

Base Model - Use this for finished products with variants

  • Creates parent BOM structure
  • Components apply to all variants
  • Brand field becomes available

Variant - Specific version under a base model

  • Links to parent base model
  • Inherits some parent properties

Standalone - Independent product

  • No parent-child relationship
  • Single product without variations

Key Dropdown Options:

  • Select a product (shows existing base models)
  • Base Model
  • Variant

Step 4: Select BOM Item Type

Choose the classification for this BOM:

Available types from dropdown:

  • Component - Sub-assemblies
  • Raw Material - Base materials
  • Labor - Human effort costs
  • Service - External services
  • Consultation - Expert services
  • Software License - Software costs
  • Overhead - Indirect costs

Step 5: Fill Basic Information

Complete the essential BOM details:

BOM Item ID

  • Auto-generated (e.g., ITMM-034)
  • Click edit icon to customize
  • Must be unique

BOM Item Name

  • Descriptive product name
  • Example: SV00234

Item HSN Number

  • Enter HSN code or click search
  • Determines tax rate
  • Highlighted in red if empty (required field)

Tax Percentage

  • Select from dropdown
  • Example: GST [12%]
  • Auto-populated from HSN if selected

  • Search existing brands
  • Click + to add new brand

Step 6: Add BOM Components
