Package Types
A package type is a kind of package you ship in — a tray, a box, a carton, a pallet. You list each one once, with its size and its empty weight, and then choose it wherever goods are packed. Open the list with Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) and search for package types; see Packages and labels for the other ways in.
Availability depends on your plan and your role. You need View on Package Type to see the list and Edit to add, change or delete.
The package types list
The list shows each package type with its Code, Package Type, Size (L × W × H), Empty Weight, Max Gross Weight and whether it is Active. Updated At can be added from the column chooser. A package type with no size or weight shows a dash.
- Search by name or code.
- Narrow with the status filter: Active and inactive, Active only or Inactive only.
- Use View, Edit or Delete on a row.
- When you have the right to add, Add Package Type and a bulk import for a whole sheet of package types are offered.
Before you add the first one, the list reads: Name the packages you ship in — Tray, Box, Carton, Pallet — with their size and empty weight, so packing can add the weight and warn on an overweight box.
Add a package type
- Click Add Package Type.
- Fill in the fields below and click Add.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Package Type Name (required) | For example Box, Tray or Pallet. One name per business unit — "Box" and "BOX" count as the same package type. |
| Description | Optional, for example "5-ply brown carton". |
| Outside size | Length, width and height, plus a Size unit. Optional; each figure must be more than zero. |
| Weight | Tare weight (the empty package) and Max gross weight (the most a full one should weigh), plus a Weight unit. Optional; each figure must be more than zero. |
| Default label layout | Optional. To be sure packages of this type print with a particular label, open that label layout and limit it to this package type. |
| Active | Tick to offer this package type when packing and on item packing levels. Untick to retire it. |
The package type gets its code automatically (PKT-001, PKT-002 and so on — you can change the numbering in Package settings).
What the form checks
- Enter a name, such as Box or Pallet.
- Any size or weight figure you type must be a number greater than zero.
- If you enter a size, pick the size unit. If you enter a weight, pick the weight unit.
- Max gross weight must be more than the empty weight.
- A name already used in the business unit is refused with a message saying so.
How weight is used
Tare weight is added to the goods when a package's weight is worked out. Going over the max gross weight only gives a warning when a package is sealed — it never blocks the package.
Edit or delete
Choose Edit on a row, change what you need and click Update. To retire a package type without losing it, untick Active. Delete asks you to confirm.
